Orthodontics

Is there an age limit for braces?

There’s no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment. We’ve helped hundreds of children, teens and adults to achieve a beautiful, straight smile.

What is a specialist orthodontist?

A specialist orthodontist is a dentist with a specialist qualification in orthodontics. Dr. Jackie Bracken completed a Clinical Doctorate in Orthodontics, and she’s a registered specialist with the Irish Dental Council.

Can dentists straighten teeth too?

Both orthodontists and dentists can straighten teeth. Dentists don’t usually have the same level of training and experience as specialists, so they tend to focus on simple aligner cases.

How long will I need to wear braces?

The average treatment time is 12–18 months, but it can take longer if your case is complicated. We can sometimes make simple tweaks in less than 12 months. We’ll give you an accurate estimate at your initial consultation.

How often will I need to visit you for check-ups?

During your treatment, we’ll see you every 6–8 weeks to check your progress and adjust your braces. Between appointments, we’ll keep in touch through our DentalMonitoring app, which we include for every patient at no extra cost.

Could braces damage my teeth?

Before we fit your braces, we’ll go through any risks with you in detail. If you look after your teeth and braces carefully, you can expect to finish your treatment with a healthy, confident smile.

Will I be able to eat normally?

You’ll be able to enjoy a varied diet while wearing braces. If you have fixed braces, you may need to cut things up into bite-sized pieces and avoid very hard or sticky foods.

Will my teeth stay straight after braces?

Once we’ve finished your treatment, we’ll fit retainers to hold your teeth in their new positions. You’ll need to wear your retainers indefinitely to maintain your amazing results.

Will I still need to visit my dentist?

You should continue to see your dentist for regular dental health checks during your orthodontic treatment. Healthy teeth and gums are essential.

Your first visit

How much is a consultation?

A comprehensive consultation with Dr. Jackie Bracken costs €100, which is redeemable against the cost of your treatment.

What do your consultations include?

A gentle examination of your teeth and bite, photos of your teeth and face, X-rays (if necessary), an overview of your treatment options, a detailed quote and payment options and time to ask us all your questions.

Can I preview my results?

Yes, at your initial consultation, we’ll take a scan of your teeth to show you a 3D simulation of your new smile.

Do you offer virtual consultations?

Braces

Do you offer different types of braces?

You can choose from metal fixed braces, clear fixed braces and Invisalign. We’ll show you all your options and help you choose the best one for your teeth and lifestyle.

Which brace is the quickest?

No brace is consistently quicker. Simple cases like mild crowding and spacing usually take less than 12 months to complete with Invisalign or cosmetic braces.

How discreet is Invisalign?

Invisalign is very discreet and far less noticeable than metal fixed braces. Most people won’t even realise that you’re wearing aligners.

Can I take my braces out?

If you opt for Invisalign, you can take your aligners out to eat, drink and clean your teeth. Just make sure you wear them for at least 20 hours each day. Fixed braces will be attached to your teeth for the duration of your treatment.

Are braces painful?

When we first fit or adjust your braces, your teeth might feel achy for a few days. Sometimes braces can rub the inside of your lips or tongue and cause ulcers. Your mouth will toughen up, and in the meantime, we’ll give you some wax to cover any bothersome areas.

Will braces give me a lisp?

Your braces might affect your speech for a couple of days while your tongue adapts. Keep talking, and it will quickly improve.

What should I do if my braces break?

Contact us, and we’ll arrange an appointment as quickly as possible or give you advice over the phone.
