Who can benefit from lingual braces?

Lingual braces are popular with adult patients, but they’re suitable for all ages. If you want to keep your treatment top secret, they’re an excellent option.

Lingual braces use traditional brackets and wires to move teeth, so they can achieve beautiful results. They’re suitable for most complaints, including crowded teeth, teeth with spaces and bite issues such as crossbites and deep bites.

If you’re looking to align your front teeth, we can fit lingual braces to just these six or eight teeth. Your treatment could be completed in as little as six months.

Your first appointment

Your journey will start with a consultation in Clonmel with specialist orthodontist Dr. Jackie Clune.

Jackie will gently examine your teeth and gums and talk you through your different treatment options.

During your appointment, we’ll take a digital scan of your teeth, which we’ll transform into a 3D preview of your new smile.

We’ll answer all your questions about lingual braces, and you can see how discreet they are for yourself on one of our typodonts (model teeth!).

Getting started

Before we fit your braces, we’ll take impressions to create moulds of your teeth. Your brackets and wires will be custom-made in Germany to closely hug the curves of your teeth.

The back surfaces of your teeth are more irregular than the front, so custom-made brackets increase the contact area between your teeth and braces. This gives us more control and helps to keep the brackets low in profile and more comfortable.

We’ll fit your braces over one or two appointments. It will take you a few days to get used to them. You may develop a slight lisp, and they could irritate your tongue at first. We’ll give you tips and techniques to help you adapt.

How they work

We use Incognito lingual braces, which in our opinion are one of the best lingual braces available. As well as being custom-made, they feature gold alloy brackets. Gold has been used in dentistry for decades. It’s non-toxic and less likely to attract plaque than other materials.

Lingual braces work just like conventional train tracks. Your specially made wires will gradually move your brackets and align your teeth. During your treatment, we’ll see you every 6–8 weeks to change your wires and make adjustments.

Towards the end of your treatment, when your smile is almost perfect, we’ll fine-tune your results. Lingual braces provide fantastic precision, so we can tweak things to make sure that you’re over the moon with your outcome.

When you’re ready to unveil your new smile, we’ll remove your braces and fit retainers. Fixed and/or removable retainers will maintain the new positions of your teeth and prevent them from relapsing. You’ll also benefit from five years of our first-class follow-up care.

Frequently asked questions

How long will my treatment take?
The average treatment time is 12–18 months, but this can vary depending on how complicated your case is. Mild crowding or spacing can sometimes be straightened in 9–12 months.
How much do lingual braces cost?
Incognito lingual braces start from €5,600. This includes every step of your treatment, from your impressions to your retainers. We’ll give you a comprehensive quote at your consultation.
Do you offer interest-free finance?
We do, you can choose from interest-free monthly or weekly repayments, as well as no deposit finance plans. We’ll go through all your options at your consultation.
Are lingual braces uncomfortable?
Because of their proximity to your tongue, you might get a few ulcers during the first few days. We’ll give you some wax, which you can shape over bothersome areas. Eventually, you won’t even notice your braces.
Will my lingual braces give me a lisp?
You might develop a lisp temporarily while your tongue adapts to its new surroundings. The quickest way to improve this is to keep talking.
Will I be able to clean my teeth easily?
You’ll need to spend a bit of extra time brushing and flossing around your teeth and braces. We recommend using a small mirror to help you brush behind your teeth.
Will I need to see my dentist for check-ups?
Yes, your dentist will check the health of your teeth and gums, so you should see them regularly during your orthodontic treatment.
